Syros, one of the smallest islands of Cyclades, is the crossroad for Greek tradition and western influence. Ermoupoli (meaning “the city of Hermes”) is the island’s capital town and has been the first important trade and industrial centre of the country in the 19th century. Although Syros belongs to the Cyclades islands, its architecture is more Medieval than Cycladic.
Ermoupoli, distinguishes for the elegant Venetian mansions, the picturesque quarter of Vaporia, the large churches and the impressive Neoclassical buildings, such as the Town Hall and Apollo Theatre in the central square. The Apollo Theatre is a mini copy of La Scala in Milan. The town also has very interesting churches, for example Agios Demetrius, Treis Hierarches and Ag Nikolas. There is also an archaeological museum as well as an interesting library. You should also try to get to Ano Syros, a small village in medieval style. Here you can visit the Catholic Cathedral of St George and the monasteries of the Jesuits and Capucins from the 18th and 17th century respectively a little further away.
The beaches of Syros are gay-friendly, nudist or isolated ones. More specifically, near Hermoupolis, you will find Armeos, an unorganized beach popular among gay and nudist tourists. Katergaki is also a popular gay-friendly beach located near Hermoupolis with exceptional crystal-clear waters. Moreover, Dolphin Bay, happens to be a nudist beach that attracts gay & straight couples.
Most of the nightlife is situated in Ermoupolis. There are lots of bars and clubs there, but the partying is more relaxed than on the “wilder” islands. You should definitely taste the local food in gay – friendly restaurant “Seminario”.
