Gay Life in Greece

Greece shares a European mentality regarding the rights of LGBT community and makes each and everyone feel like home when visiting. The country has always featured high up on the list of gay destinations, this in part due to a history of homosexual liberties in ancient times. In Greek antiquity, homosexuality has been expressed in the writings of Plato, Herodotus and by a plethora of other Greek intellectuals. Achilles and Patroclus, Sappho the poet are examples of deep emotional bonds between same sex people in the ancient world.

In modern times, Greece’s capital, Athens and islands, such as Mykonos and Santorini, have often been strong magnets for gay tourists. Mykonos is ranked among the best gay destinations in the world. Mykonos showcases a certain gay lifestyle, which is not like any other place in the world, combining luxury with fun and beauty. While Athens, like most European capitals, hosts “Athens Pride Festival” every June, since 2005. A pride parade takes place in front of the Parliament, during the day, with hundreds of people expressing themselves. The level of gay acceptance in smaller islands and towns of the country is quite similar. The locals are very friendly, however, a discreet behavior when is public is recommended.
